Fall is a wonderful time of year. With bonfires, pumpkin spice, snuggling by the fire and apple picking, there are plenty of fun things to do and eat! It also means that the holidays are coming up and everyone that knows me knows how much I LOVE Thanksgiving and Christmas. Not only do I enjoy spending time with friends and family, I also enjoy eating my favorite foods (everyone knows that holiday food is TO DIE FOR!)
I grew up helping my mom in the kitchen. She made everything from scratch and I always loved October because that meant fall was officially in full swing and mom was going to make pumpkin and apple spiced EVERYTHING. One of my favorite fall treats is her Apple Crisp.
Some of my favorite childhood memories include going apple picking and visiting the pumpkin patch. I knew when we were coming home with dozes of apples that momma was going to make her infamous apple crisp!
Many people think that there is some sort of magic to gluten free baking, but there really isn’t, it just requires the correct materials and some practice. This recipe is fairly simple and the only ingredients you need are apples, sugar, cinnamon, butter (vegan), flour (GF) and salt! It’s so easy even the kids can make it (with some supervision, of course!)
I wasn’t always gluten and dairy free, in fact, I went my entire childhood generously consuming both. When I was first diagnosed with Celiac Disease & casein intolerance, I was convinced that I would never be able to enjoy my favorite foods again. I quickly became aware that this was FAR from the case. I set myself on a mission to make all of my favorite childhood recipes gluten and dairy free.
And that is exactly what I did.
So slowly, but surely I am sharing my celiac safe recipes with you one at a time!

Sweet and Savory Apple Crisp - Organic, Gluten Free and Vegan
Don't be surprised if you eat the entire container of this delicious gluten free and vegan apple crisp!
Ingredients
- 10-12 Organic Apples I use a mix of Macintosh and Granny Smith, but feel free to use your favorite apples!
- 1/4 Cup Water
- 1 tsp Organic Salt
- 4 tbsp Organic Cinnamon You can add more cinnamon if you would like, this is just a general amount.
- 1/3 Cup Earth Balance Organic Vegan Butter
- 3/4 Cup Organic Gluten Free Flour
- 1 Cup Organic Cane Sugar
Instructions

Preheat the oven to 425°. Coat 7 x 11 Pyrex container with the butter, be sure to cover all of the sides and the bottom with a light coat.

Peel and slice apples and lay a single layer of apples down. Sprinkle 1/2 TBSP of Cinnamon AND Sugar and repeat until you have multiple layers. Once all of the apples are layered, pour the 1/4 cup of water over them.

In a separate mixing bowl, add the remaining sugar, cinnamon, salt and butter to the flour. Mix with clean hands until a crumbly consistency is reached.

Sprinkle the crumble on top and bake for 50 minutes. Let cool for at least 30 minutes. Best served warm with your favorite dairy free/vegan cool whip or vanilla ice cream!
